My Story...

Many years ago when I trained as an Acupuncturist I also did additional training in Paediatrics, pre & postnatal Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine. Years went by and as a practitioner I tended to treat mainstream problems, though specialising in gynaecology, having not been associated with many mums and their babies.

That is of course until it was my turn to have a baby…

My daughter is a bit older now, but in the early days it was a really rough time for her and parenting was much tougher than I thought. You see, Jean was born premature, which of course gave us a real fright, though she got stronger in the intensive ward.

We were dying to bring her home and have a ‘normal’ newborn. Sadly within the first week of her being born she developed severe colic and reflux. This meant in her case, that each time she was lying down to rest, she was in terrible pain and if that was not bad enough, each afternoon/evening her pain stayed with her for hours on end, no matter if she was upright or lying down. It’s the most heartbreaking thing to see your little baby in so much pain and crying and screaming from it, and all you can do is cuddle her and do the best you can to comfort her. It was really hard to experience. We tried everything to heal her, to ease this. We followed all the advice of Paediatrics, our fabulous midwife and doctors. They had many wonderful ideas and advice, and goodness did we try them all—money was not a barrier when it came to helping her. Some things helped a little, most did not. Finally a couple of months in, feeling very tired and bedraggled I finally I thought “Aha! Acupuncture!” and pulled out all my old books & found my trainings for paediatric acupuncture. I guess I had been too tired to even consider this and I had never used it before on a baby, so it didn’t naturally pop into my thoughts at first.

So I treated our baby using very brief techniques for several days. We were amazed! It totally transformed our wee girl from being in constant pain to being happy and relaxed. You could literally feel the tension was gone from her body. It’s funny that it took me this long to treat kids, especially my own. But I now use Acupuncture on her for everything; teething, colds, fever you name it, and she’s the healthiest kid around.

What is Paediatric Acupuncture?

Paediatric acupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years, and is increasingly seen in the West as an effective treatment for children.

It is a relaxing form of treatment that works to strengthen general health, boosting immunity to colds and other childhood illnesses. As children become healthier, they feel happier. Children seem to gain large benefits from preventative medicine and when it comes to their reaction to Chinese Medicine, it's no different.

Paediatric acupuncture can be used from newborn upwards. Specially designed needles are used to minimize any discomfort. The needles are inserted, stimulated and immediately taken out.

Acupuncture can be used alongside medications, is holistic and curative rather than symptomatic and has no side affects.

Alternatives to acupuncture can be used in clinic for those suitable, such as laser & ear points. Dietary advice and herbal medicine are recommended, so the parents can continue to treat their children if necessary.
